Summer watering in Saudi Arabia: how much, when, and how

Water deeply and less often, not lightly and daily

This is the single most important rule on this page. Daily shallow watering wets only the top few centimetres of soil, so roots stay near the surface where it is hottest and evaporation is fastest, and the plant becomes entirely dependent on you. Deep, infrequent watering pushes moisture down and the roots follow it into a cooler layer that holds moisture far more steadily. The result is a plant that survives a hot day, or a gap in the schedule, without collapsing.

The right time is early morning

Water just before or shortly after sunrise. Temperatures are at their lowest and the air is still, so the maximum amount of water reaches the soil instead of evaporating. Watering at midday wastes a large share before it ever lands. Watering at night leaves foliage and soil wet for hours — ideal conditions for fungal disease, and nowhere more visibly than on a lawn.

How to tell a plant is actually thirsty

Don't go by the leaves alone; many plants wilt at midday in severe heat and recover by evening without being short of water. The reliable test is simple: push a finger about five centimetres into the soil. Dry means water it. Still damp means wait.

Mistakes we see every summer

These four account for most of the summer problems we are called out to:

• Adding more waterings instead of making each one deeper
• Watering every plant on the same schedule despite wildly different needs
• Skipping mulch, which measurably cuts evaporation from the soil surface
• Leaving a blocked sprinkler or dripper unnoticed until a dead patch appears

Salinity: the silent problem

If the garden is irrigated from a well, every watering leaves salts behind that concentrate in the root zone as the water evaporates. The first sign is usually leaf-tip burn despite consistent watering. The fix is to give one very heavy watering every few weeks to flush the soil and push salts below the root zone.
